Dave Gettleman spoke during the Combine and expressed a willingness to move back in the Draft.
The New York Giants sit at the number 4 position in the 2020 NFL Draft and although we are taught not to put too much stock into what GMs say to the media especially not when it's something as generic as we are willing to trade down. After all unless you are the Colts waiting to pick Peyton Manning with the top spot you should at the very least entertain the idea of moving back, but hearing that from Dave Gettleman actually meant something.
The former Panthers GM is known throughout the industry for being a guy that doesn't trade down, he didn't in Carolina and he hasn't done it in New York either. In fact he traded up for DeAndre Baker in last year's first round but speaking to the media at the Combine he admitted to that possibility.
Giants fans all around the Globe have been adamant that Gettleman should shop around the pick and the reason behind it is not that complicated.
Daniel Jones while inconsistent showed enough promise that he can be the franchise QB, which basically rules New York out of that market in a QB heavy draft.
Joe Burrow and Chase Young look like the sure fire top two picks but beyond them is anybody's guess as to who gets picked next.
Detroit is expected to either trade down for a team that wants Tua or take the Cornerback out of Ohio State Jeff Okudah, while he is the likeliest choice if the Lions stay put, it's far from a guarantee that they'll pick him. Like I said taking the QBs aside beyond Chase Young there really is no consensus pick. I guarantee you most GMs will have a different player on their board at that spot and it will be up to need as well.
Even if the Lions move back and someone like Miami for instance grabs Tua which would hurt the Giants' market for a trade down, I guarantee you there will be multiple teams looking to move up and take Herbert.
If they get down to seven let's say, New York can grab which one is left of Isaiah Simmons, Jeff Okudah and the top OT on their board. With the top QBs off the board, plus Chase Young, most likely two of the three would be picked but even that is not a guarantee.
If the Giants choose to trade further down than seven, they could get maybe a Jerry Jeudy or CeeDee Lamb, or even one of the linemen that's left.
It's really not that hard to understand. New York has a high pick in a QB heavy draft with a lot of QB needy franchises. The demand will be there and if Gettleman plays his cards right, he could get a king's ransom.
