As Aston Villa supporters invaded the pitch after the side's 2-1 win against Leicester to take them to the final of the League Cup, we got a look at the better side of football way back in the day
Dean Smith's squad had a lot of things going against them an up and down season in the Premier League, Wesley and McGinn both suffering very serious injuries, entering the second leg of the semifinal against a much superior side with your third string goalie and a striker who is making his debut after signing from Genk, playing at a different level of speed, despite his talent I don't think it was fair to expect much if anything from Samatta today, the first Tanzanian to play in England.
Despite all that went wrong for them, Aston Villa still managed to come out victorious willing their way into a victory with a goal in extra time by Trezeguet that broke the tie just when we seemed destined to get a penalty shootout. Much like in most upset wins the former European champions had a lot go their way, Jamie Vardy the deadliest weapon in all of Great Britain was fit enough to play but only for 30 minutes or so, his absence was huge notvonky because of what he can do on the pitch but also because his substitute Ilheanacho hasn't had much success leading the offense, his resurgence under Brendan Rodgers has come as a second striker usually in a diamond midfield, playing centrally and behind Vardy, Rodgers obviously couldn't do that today so he turned to his usual formation replacing Vardy for Ilheanacho, Perez and Barnes out wide were not nearly as effective as the usually are. Even with fhese issues Leicester managed to outplay Aston Villa in the first half forcing Myland, the Norwegian goalkeeper to make some crucial saves and in the only shot on target Villa had they scored.
Jamie Vardy came on in the second half and Leicester quickly scored at a time in the match when they weren't playing as well as they had been, which only made it more brutal for Dean Smith and his side, Jack Gtealish on more than one occasion as he is prone to do, lost his temper, that's something he has to work on, as the captain of Aston Villa and a young star looking for a place in the 2020 England's squad for the Euro Cup he cannot keep doing that, it's only a matter of time before that temperament comes back to bite him.
Trezeguét interestingly enough had a pretty clear chance in the second half running in from the left and he managed to take a shot that pleased Kasper Schmeichel, that's how weak it was, but he came through on a different run from left side breaking the tie in the final minutes of the match.

Leicester missed a chance to put a statement on their phenomenal campaign by reaching the final of the League Cup but if they finish in the top four, you won't see any Leicester fans complaining about an exit in the semifinal at the hands of Aston Villa that played their Champions League final against them, obviously they still have a big fight against relegation but you can't quantify the boost they get after such a win.
